Smilow Burroughs Clubhouse
- Wakeman Boys & Girls Club has been operating in Southport, CT since 1913 with a “mission of enhancing the physical, social and emotional development of area youth through programs that perpetuate sound citizenship”. The club serves over 3,500 members each year.
- In June of 2011, Wakeman opened the Smilow Burroughs Clubhouse in neighboring Bridgeport, CT to provide similar programs to the youth of Bridgeport. The brand new building was constructed to very high environmental standards and in 2013 was awarded the distinction of LEED Platinum Certification, the highest level attainable. This certification level was partially enabled by the 49 KW solar power system installed on its roof.
- The system is comprised of 256 Solyndra solar modules arranged over a white membrane “cool” roof. The system generates between 45,000 and 50,000 kwhs of electricity annually, offsetting the emission of 25 tons of CO2. Youth programs at the clubhouse will include environmental education including photo-voltaics and a video monitor in the lobby will deliver a real time display of what is being produced on the building’s roof.
- The solar power systems were designed and installed by CSolar, LLC, now Encon Solar Energy Division, Inc.
